Five Benefits of Capturing Impact

Written by Seth Fink | Sep 11, 2024 3:00:00 PM

My name is Seth Fink, and I’m a Solutions Engineer here at KaiNexus. I hold a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification and am a Certified Associate of Project Management (CAPM). Before joining the KaiNexus team, I was a Process Improvement Analyst responsible for leading improvement projects, coaching continuous improvement, and championing/administrating our organization’s KaiNexus instance.

One of the things I loved about KaiNexus as a customer and now as an employee is its powerful ability to capture and report the impact of improvement work at scale. This capability was critical to our continuous improvement team, enabling us to provide clear reports on the financial and quality impacts of our initiatives to our executive leaders.

With that in mind, I’d like to share five reasons why capturing improvement impacts is essential.

1. Measuring Success

There’s a saying: “You can’t win if you don’t keep score.” This is especially true in continuous improvement. Capturing impact allows us to quantify the success of our efforts. By tracking impacts, we can identify which improvements are truly pushing the needle forward on strategic goals and which may need further refinement.

2. Justifying Investments

Another key benefit of capturing impact is the ability to justify the resources invested in continuous improvement work. When you can clearly demonstrate the return on investment of improvement projects, it becomes easier to secure ongoing support and resources from stakeholders. The ability to calculate ROI is an incredibly powerful tool for making the case for future CI initiatives.

3. Ensuring Strategic Alignment

Capturing the impact of improvement work also ensures that our efforts align with the organization’s strategic objectives. By capturing and reporting the outcomes of improvements, we can verify that they are contributing to the broader goals of the business. This alignment is crucial for maintaining focus and driving meaningful change.

4. Identifying Best Practices

When we capture impact across a wide range of projects, patterns begin to emerge. These patterns help us identify which types of improvements deliver the highest return on investment and have the most significant positive impact. These insights can guide the development of best practices, allowing the organization to replicate success and avoid repeating mistakes.

5. Motivating Teams

One of the most rewarding aspects of capturing impact is its motivational power. When teams can see the tangible benefits of their improvement work—whether in cost savings, time savings, quality improvements, or enhanced customer satisfaction—they are more likely to stay engaged and motivated. Recognizing and celebrating these achievements boosts morale and fosters a culture of continuous improvement.

Conclusion

Capturing the impact of improvement work is not just a best practice; it’s a strategic imperative. By measuring success, justifying investments, ensuring strategic alignment, identifying best practices, and motivating teams, we create a strong foundation for sustained growth and improvement. At KaiNexus, the ability to capture and report impact at scale has been a game-changer for our customers’ continuous improvement efforts, and I encourage everyone to leverage this powerful tool to its fullest potential.
