How to Make a PICK Chart in KaiNexus

A PICK chart - which stands for Possible, Implement, Challenge, and Kill (or Kibosh) - is a visual tool used prioritize ideas. They’re typically used after (or during) brainstorming sessions to help a team identify which ideas can be implemented easily and with a high payoff.

With a combination of the utilization of Boards and Attributes within KaiNexus, you can build a PICK chart that everyone on your team (and any leaders who should be kept in the loop) can access from anywhere, at any time.

What Attributes do you need?

Our customers that use PICK charts generally create a single “Priority” Attribute with four possible options:

  • Low effort, high impact
  • High effort, high impact
  • Low effort, low impact
  • High effort, low impact

Every item that is created should be given a priority so that the PICK chart can be arranged properly.

How should your PICK chart Board be organized?

First, you’ll want to build a new Board with a 2x2 arrangement.

Next, you should add four Cards that each filter a list of all items by one “Priority” Attribute. Convention holds that:

  • The “Low effort, high impact” Card should be in the top left corner of the Board.
  • The “High effort, high impact” Card should be in the top right corner.
  • The “Low effort, low impact” Card should be in the bottom left corner.
  • The “High effort, low impact” Card should be in the bottom right corner.

If you want the Board to be even simpler to understand at a glance, you can add a secondary header to each Card that describes the action that should come of the Improvements listed. Not everyone knows about the secondary header, but it is a really powerful way to label your Cards.

  • The “Low effort, high impact” Card should be given a green secondary header called “Implement” since these are the items that will give you the most bang for their buck.

  • The “High effort, high impact” Card should be given an orange secondary header called “Challenge” since these are the items that will need a little more investment to get a high impact.

  • The “Low effort, low impact” Card should be given a black secondary header called “Possible” since these are the items that will be easy to implement but won’t give a huge payoff.

  • The “High effort, low impact” Card should be given a red secondary header called “Kill” since these are the items that’s payoffs probably aren’t worth the effort.
